DUSHANBE, September 19, Asia-Plus -- The Communist Party (CPT) will participate in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for November 6, CPT leader Shodi Shabbdolov told Asia-Plus Thursday afternoon.

“On September 23, the CPT will hold a congress in Dushanbe, and the party will nominate its candidate to run in the 2013 presidential election,” Shodi Shabdolov said, noting that his party has a clear-cut program.

Asked how he assesses participation of small and powerless political parties in the upcoming presidential election, CPT leader noted that it is a normal democratic process.

“International democratic practice shows that the majority of political forces, irrespective of their political weight and popularity among the electorate, participate in elections,” said Shabdolov.  “Thereby they emphasize their presence in political and social life of a country.”

CPT leader also pointed to the necessity of making radical changes to the country’s electoral laws, especially to the presidential election law.

Founded in 1918, the Communist Party of Tajikistan was registered in 1991.  According to some source, the party now has more than 45,000 members.
