EU special envoy for Central Asia pays official visit to Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, September 21, 2015, Asia-Plus -- The European Union Special Representative for Central Asia (EUSR), Ambassador Peter Burian, paid an official visit to Tajikistan.

The EU Delegation to Tajikistan says that during the visit, the EUSR conveyed to the Tajik authorities high interest of the EU to further developing relations with Tajikistan as the country is considered pivotal in the light of broader security issues in the region and beyond.  He also underlined EU support for internal stability of Tajikistan in the context of recent developments, adding also that "national accord and dialogue is perceived by the EU as essential to attain durable stability".  Ambassador Burian also called for further and comprehensive reforms to enable economic and social development as the best answer to the current challenges.

At the meeting with Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Aslov, Ambassador Burian reiterated EU support to stability of Tajikistan in the light of multiple internal and external challenges country is currently facing. He underlined also the need to continue to build long term stability on the ground of national accord, inclusiveness and enhancement of democratic dialogue.  Ambassador Burian, in particular, stressed the importance of the EU -Tajikistan Human Rights dialogue.  Forthcoming EU - Tajikistan Cooperation Council and the priority issues in bilateral relations were also broadly discussed.  Minister Aslov informed also about the Tajikistan`s efforts aimed at long term and strategic economic and development.  There was also extensive exchange of views on regional issues in Central Asia and beyond, in particular on the current situation in Afghanistan and developments in the Middle East.

EUSR also met with Mr. Erkinkhon Rahmatullozoda, the State Adviser for Foreign Policy and broad range of issues were discussed, including the dangers of radicalism and extremism in the region.  Latest violent incidents and security response by the authorities were also discussed.  Ambassador Burian expressed the EU firm stance that no political goal should be linked with violence against the state institutions.  He also stressed the importance of relaxation of political situation in the country, underlining the need for enhancement of economic and social development on the basis of national accord.

During the meeting with Saidrahmon Nazrizoda, Deputy Minister for Economic Development and Trade of Tajikistan, particular attention was paid to the current economic and social situation in the country. Ambassador Burian underlined readiness of the EU to support Tajik authorities in efforts to deal with effects of spill over from other economies and he was briefed on the Government`s Action Plan to mitigate the consequences of the crisis.

Ambassador Burian also met with representatives of the international community and development partners of Tajikistan, sharing a common interest for stability and sustainable development of Tajikistan.  With the development partners of Tajikistan he exchanged views on possible further assistance and support to economic and social development, in parallel with comprehensive reforms needed in many sectors so as to ensure foreign investment, social stability, job creation and economic sustainability.

During the meeting with representatives of the civil society, the current situation and trends in the country were discussed, and Ambassador Burian pointed the indispensable role of the civil society in the political life and the overall development of the country.
