President gets acquainted with achievements of the country’s animal husbandry

DUSHANBE, July 29, 2016, Asia-Plus – President Emomali Rahmon yesterday attended an exhibition of achievements of Tajik livestock breeders that took place in the Varzob district.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, the exhibition was organized for the purpose of promoting food safety.

Known livestock breeders and beekeepers from Dushanbe, Tursunzoda, Hisor, Roudaki, Varzob, Shahrinav, Ayni and Kuhistoni Mastchoh have put on display their achievements in animal husbandry and bee-farming at the exhibition.

Various breeds of sheep and yak have reportedly been displayed at the exhibition.

Animal husbandry is one of significant and profitable branches of Tajikistan agrarian sector.

Since 1991, the cattle population has increased in Tajikistan by 2.209 million head (59 percent increase) and the sheep and goat population has increased by more than 5.279 million head (57.4 percent increase).  The horse population over the report period has increased in Tajikistan by 78,300 head (49 percent increase).

Production of livestock goods has also increased over the report period.  In 2015 alone, Tajikistan reportedly produced 218,000 tons of meat, 889,000 tons of milk and 7,000 tons of wool.

Yak-breeding is also developing in the country.  Currently, there are 28,566 head of yak in Tajikistan and the majority of them (more than 25,700 head) are in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).
