DUSHANBE, September 26, 2014, Asia-Plus – On Friday September 26, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon congratulated Dr. Ashraf Ghani on his election as President of Afghanistan, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

In his congratulatory cable, Tajik leader, in particular, noted that formation of a Government of National Unity is of vital importance for the fraternal people of Afghanistan.

Tajik leader expressed confidence that bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Afghanistan will expand in the future as well.

President Rahmon also sent a congratulatory cable to Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, who took newly created role of chief executive.

“I am sure you will devotedly serve your country,” Rahmon noted in his cable to Dr. Abdullah Abdullah.

We will recall that former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani was named Afghanistan's president-elect on September 21 after he signed a deal to share power with his opponent, Abdullah Abdullah.  In this agreement Ghani was made president and Abdullah Abdullah took a new position known as the chief executive officer.

Dr. Ashraf Ghani is expected to be sworn in as president on September 29.
