Regions elect members of Tajikistan’s upper house of parliament

DUSHANBE, March 29, 2015 Asia-Plus -- Regions, cities and districts have elected members of Tajikistan’s upper house (Majlisi Milli) of parliament.

Indirect elections to the Majlisi Milli took place on March 27.

Dushanbe Mayor Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev and Head of President’s Executive Office Bakhtiyor Khudoyorzoda have been re-elected as members of the Majlisi Milli.

Besides, a joint meeting of members of the Dushanbe legislature and local councils of Dushanbe’s districts elected Ms. Nargis Rahmonova, Academic Secretary of the Institute of Tajik Language and Literature, Oriental Studies and Written Heritage of the Academy of Sciences, Mr. Nourali Shoyev, Rector of Tajik Technical University, and Mr. Mahmadyusuf Imomov, Rector of Tajik National University.

GBAO Governor Shodikhon Jamshed and Darvoz District Chairman Saidburhon Abdurahmonzoda were also re-elected as members of the Majlisi Milli.

A joint meeting of people’s deputies of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) and its districts and the city of Khorog also elected Khorog Mayor Qimmatgul Aliberdiyeva, Presidential Lyceum Principal Harambegim Mahtobshoyeva and Ishkashim District Chairman Zikrikhudo Samadov as members of the Majlisi Milli,” Rahmonqulov said.

A joint meeting of people’s deputies of the Kharlon province and its districts and the cities elected Khatlon Governor Davlatsho Guliahmadzoda, Kulob Mayor Khairullo Amonullo, Norak Mayor Mirali Rajabzoda, Bokhat District Head Jabbor Ghaffor, and Qubodiyon District Head Saidumron Abdurahmonzoda as members of the Majlisi Milli.

The Sughd province will be represented in a new convocation of the Majlisi Milli by its Governor Abdurahmon Qodiri, Khujand Mayor Rajabboy Ahmadzoda, Istaravshan Mayor Naim Nabizoda, Panjakent Mayor Islom Shafiyev and Isfara-base Lyceum Principal Rahmon Shorahmatov.

Districts and cities subordinate to the center will be represented in the parliament upper house by Vahdat Mayor Rahmonali Amir, Tajik Railways Head Qurbon Nematov, Rasht District Head Qanoatsho Loiqzoda, Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO) Director General Abdurahmon Jurayev and Chairwoman of the Guliston Jamoat in the Roudaki District Sayohat Dadajonova.

Citizens who reached 35 years of age and have higher education are eligible to be elected to the Majlisi Milli.

The Majlisi Milli has 33 members and 25 of them (three-fourths of the total number of members of the Majlisi Milli) are elected at joint meetings of people’s deputies of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region and its cities and districts, provinces and their cities and districts, Dushanbe city and its districts, cities and districts subordinate to the centre, on the basis of indirect elections by means of secret ballot.

Eight members (one-fourths of the members of the Majlisi Milli) are appointed by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan.

The Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region, provinces, Dushanbe City, cities and districts subordinate to the centre have an equal number of representatives in the Majlisi Milli.

Each former President of the Republic of Tajikistan shall be the life member of the Majlisi Milli, if he doesn’t refuse to use this right.
