Tajik capital listed among 29 cities with the worst quality of life in the world

DUSHANBE, May 23, 2016, Asia-Plus – Dushanbe is listed among 29 cities with the worst quality of life in the world.

Mercer, which is one of the world’s largest HR consultancy firms, has released its Quality of Living Index, which basically looks at which cities provide the best quality of life.

Business Insider has already looked at the 23 cities with the best quality of life and also 29 cities with the worst quality of life in the world.

Dushanbe, jointly with Abuja, Nigeria, is listed 19th among 29 cities with the worst quality of life in the world.

According to Business Insider, poverty and energy shortages are a huge issue for Dushanbe and country as a whole. The World Bank also warns that doing business there is difficult due to the inadequate infrastructure, Business Insider said.

Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), Ashgabat (Turkmenistan), and Tashkent (Uzbekistan) are listed 21st, 23rd, and 26th respectively.

The Iraqi capital, Baghdad, is described as the world’s worst city to live in.  

Meanwhile, Western European cities dominate the top of Mercer’s 2016 Quality of Living Rankings, with Vienna remaining in the No.1 spot.

Mercer’s annual Quality of Living survey is conducted to help multinational companies and other employers compensate employees fairly when sending them on international assignments.

Looking at 450 cities across the world, Mercer takes into account the following metrics to judge which cities made the list for the best quality of life: political and social environment (political stability, crime, law enforcement); economic environment (currency exchange regulations, banking services); socio-cultural environment (media availability and censorship, limitations on personal freedom); medical and health considerations (medical supplies and services, infectious diseases, sewage, waste disposal, air pollution); schools and education (standards and availability of international schools); public services and transportation (electricity, water, public transportation, traffic congestion); recreation (restaurants, theatres, cinemas, sports and leisure); consumer goods (availability of food/daily consumption items, cars); housing (rental housing, household appliances, furniture, maintenance services); and natural environment (climate, record of natural disasters).
