Tajik foreign minister, WB country manager for Tajikistan discuss cooperation

DUSHANBE, June 16, 2016, Asia-Plus – Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Aslov yesterday received Ms. Patricia Veevers-Carter, World Bank Country Manager for Tajikistan.

According to the Tajik MFA information department, the two discussed issues related collaboration between the Government of Tajikistan and the World Bank on holding the High-Level Symposium on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6 and Targets: Ensuring Availability and Sustainable management of Water and Sanitation for All that will take place in Dushanbe from August 9-11, this year.

The World Bank Group is one of the world's largest sources of funding and knowledge for developing countries.  It comprises five closely associated institutions: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA), which together form the World Bank; the International Finance Corporation (IFC); the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA); and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Each institution plays a distinct role in the mission to fight poverty and improve living standards for people in the developing world.

Tajikistan became a member of the World Bank on June 4, 1993.  The World Bank’s active portfolio in Tajikistan includes 24 projects (including regional projects and trust funds) with a net commitment of US$405 million.  It is aimed to support economic growth through private sector development, and to increase investment in better public services for people, such as education, health, municipal services and social protection.
