Tajik ruling party’s numbers growing

KHUJAND, November 10, 2015, Asia-Plus -- More than 3,000 residents of Sughd province entered the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on the eve of Constitution Day, which is celebrated in Tajikistan on November 6.

According to PDP’s organization in Sughd, the new members of the party included 1,200 residents of Khujand, 900 residents of the Bobojonghafourov district, 600 residents of Istaravshan and 342 residents of Konibodom.

In all, 9,000 people have joined the ranks of PDP’s organization in Sughd over the first ten months of this year, the source said.

PDP’s organization in Sughd now has 83,000 members, including 43,500 women.

Founded in 1994, the People’s Democratic Party is the largest political party in Tajikistan, boasting more than 260,000 registered members.  President Emomali Rahmon is chairman of the party.

At the legislative elections, February 27 and March 13, 2005, the party won 74% of the popular vote and 52 out of 63 seats.  This was an increase from the 2000 elections, in which they won 64.9% of the vote and 38 seats.  At the last legislative elections, February 28, 2010, the party won 71.69% of the popular vote and 45 out of 63 seats.
